Preparing Yourself For Surgery
We advise that you do the following prior to your surgery:
- Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory pain relief medications for 2 weeks prior to your surgery. Please note – If you take aspirin for a medical condition such as heart disease, stroke or blood clotting disorders. Do not discontinue treatment without speaking to your doctor, and ensure your surgeon is aware of treatment.
- If you are a smoker, you need to quit smoking for at least 2 weeks prior to your surgery as smoking greatly increases your risk of complications.
- Ensure you have a copy of your post op guidelines. This will be given to you at the time of your pre op education session with our registered nurse.
- Ensure you make arrangements for someone to collect you from the hospital following your surgery and for someone to stay with you for the first 24 to 48hours after surgery.
- An adequate diet is essential for good healing, so ensure you think about what you will eat at home following your surgery.
- Leave any valuables at home on the day of your surgery.
- Remove all makeup, nail polish etc prior to surgery.
- Ensure you have your post operative support garment with you on the day of surgery as immediate use of this will give support, reduce pain and can help with inflammation.
Bring loose, comfortable clothing to hospital to wear following your procedure. A button down shirt is usually best as this will be easy to get on and off.
